By Emma D.
Vanessa came up with the idea of growing blueberries - in addition to growing raspberries. The land turned out to be more suited to blueberries and in May 2003, the first blueberries were planted; these are irrigated using Purbeck hills’ stream water.
In 2006, they started to supply Lush with fresh blueberries during the blueberry season (July-Sept) and now The Purbeck Blueberry Company also freezes 1 tonne of blueberries, so we can make our famous Catastrophe Cosmetic fresh face mask all year round using locally grown blueberries. They also grow new potatoes, courgettes, French beans, carrots, mangetout, garlic, sweetcorn, lettuce, spinach and cabbage. Last year, they even started a range of blueberry jam and sauces, which have proved very popular!
The blueberries are sold in local shops, at the farmers market in Wareham, The Purbeck Producers Market in Swanage, wholesale markets in London and also in Marks and Spencer.
Blueberries and all other crops are also available to buy directly from the farm during the summer (June-September) and jam, sauces and fruit bushes are available all year round at the farm and at the farmers’ market. The farm is open 10.00-4.30 every day during the summer and on Saturday mornings during the winter.
Their aim was to grow crops to the very highest standards; they personally do the pruning over four months in the winter in order to ensure berries of good quality, size and flavour. The first crop was harvested in 2005 and ‘The Purbeck Blueberry Company’ was born.
